In 1850, the total value of imported Platinum & platina was USD$ 207,400. A US Customs agent a New York certified that no platina ore was imported, though $12,183. of unmanufactured platina was recorded.
However, "Native" Platinum was sold from NY catalogues; it originated in Colombia, Russia or outside the USA. And the Malvern Works were refining & producing for dentists after 1842; it's most likely an undisclosed amount of platina was shipping to Philadelphia.
Wells' textbook mentions manufactured Platinum retailed at $18. - 20. in the mid 1850s; these imported goods had been tariffed accordingly.
In 1853, the State Geologist of California reported the "commercial value" of crude platina was "about one-half the price of Gold" (crude Gold, selling as low as $16./oz.)
Platinum imports may have increased in 1851 after the discovery of California Gold and the utility of processing Au in Platinum stills.
1850: 1 Troy Ounce Platinum (Semi-Mfg & ore, Import) = USD$ 6.10
1850: 1 Ozt. Platinum (Mfg. Retail) "absurdly high" ; ~ double UK price $9.82 ?
c. 1851: 1 Ozt. platina (Ore, Mkt.) = USD$ 5.
1851: 1 Ozt. Platinum (Mfg. Ret.) = USD$ 15.
c. 1852: 1 Ozt. platina (Ore, Ret.) ~ USD$ 8.
