Thénard 's seminal chemistry textbook did not record Platinum prices in the 1813 Edition. Circa 1822, his ms. updates both a scarcity of platina and a corrected price 22% higher. Berthollet' s death 6 October 1822 was unrecorded; the 5 volume set had precious few changes for 1823.  Also unrecorded, Dulong and Thénard's own experiments with Platinum (in 1823) are omitted, but (for the author) that activity would familiarize any price changes as noteworthy.

'A few years ago" = circa 1812/3, ten years earlier.

Purification of platinum, which was so hard and so long past, is much easier today (1215): Also, instead of selling for Fr. 30 per Once (as it did a few years ago) Platinum does not sell for more than Fr. 22, although the ore is very rare in the trade.

June, 1822?: 1 Troy Oz. Platinum (Paris: retail) = Fr 22.346 (USD$ )

June, 1822?: 1 Troy Oz. Platinum (refined) = Fr 23.90
October, 1823: 1 Troy Oz. Platinum (refined) = Fr 31.49

January-December, 1823: 1 Troy Oz. Platinum (refined) = Fr 32. - 38.65

c.1821/2?: The first edition appeared in 1826; dating in the text indicates the ms. was likely drafted in 1823/4, not later.

'General knowledge' antedates this price range to 1818-21, however. Platina was getting expensive in 1822.

1822: The French importation of Colombian platina was 37.4 Kgs (~1,202 Ozt.)

The number of Paris Platinum firms was small but growing, 1822-28. Desmoutis began working in Platinum in in 1822. Jannetty (Fils) continued selling Platinum until 1828; Bréant and Cuoq, Courturier et Cie. were independent shops by 1828.

In 1823, Bréant was able to refine about 1 kg. of Palladium with the entire supply of Platinum in the Spanish Mint. Undoubtedly this explains the massive importation of 1822 ; given the sudden oversupply, retail platina Prices should have been lower than London.

In 1821/2, news from St. Petersbourg to Flanders (& Paris) took 21 days.
