Russia, 1850

'Bulk Scrap' was the Poud Rate of ~16.4 Kg; the Kilogram Rate is seen to be ~18.5% higher.

1849: 1 Ozt. Platinum (Coin @ StPb, .970) = Fr 26.593 (USD$ 5.00)

1850: 1 Troy Oz. Platinum (SPb: Bulk Scrap ~.970 Fine)= 5.84 руб (Fr. 22.34)
1850: 1 Ozt. Pt (SPb: Bulk Scrap ~.999 Fine)= 5.757 руб (Fr. 23.03)

Assuming the prior Russian Mint Refining Rate (1836) of Fr. 2.734 per Ozt:
1850: 1 Ozt. Platinum (SPb: Base Cost ~.999 Fine) = 6.44 руб (Fr. 25.76; USD$ 5.13)

Assuming the Paris 'Wet Refining' Rate (for profit, 1857) of Fr. 7.88 per Ozt:
1850: 1 Ozt. Platinum (Paris: Producer Base +Profit) = 7.70 руб (Fr. 30.807; USD$ 6.14)

Where the Pfund = 32 Loths = 7,680 Gran (467.74 Grams; 15.04 Troy Ounces.) The Mark Pfund = 15.03 Troy Ounces and the Gulden/Florin was worth USD$ 0.395, Gold was 5x Platinum, which was ~ 3x more than Silver.

Incidentally, this was a common price expression as late as the 1870s. Platinum prices were certainly less stable than this republished price implies.

USA, 1840s: Erratic Platinum Rise

The formal de-monetization of the Platinum Rouble (and the subsequent breakdown of  Russian mining operations) triggered global price fluctuations that lately effected US prices. As production ceased, supplies briefly became strained c. 1847,  indicated by higher US prices.  Most platina probably came via the Caribbean.

US tariffs on refined Platinum products encouraged fledgling US refiners.

(Subsequent editions repeat this data and the forex tables above it.)
1845:  1 Troy Ounce Platinum (Russian sponge/ingot @ Europe) ~ USD$ 4.
1846/7: 1 Troy Ounce Platinum (ingot, whols.)  = USD$ 7.50 - 8.33
1846/7: 1 Troy Ounce Platinum (est. refined)  = USD$ 8.82 - 9.80

See Also:

c.1842: 1 Troy Ounce platina = USD$ 4.
1848:  1 Troy Ounce of Platinum (refined, US whols.) = $ 10.0
1849: Troy Ounce of platina (ore, market) = $ 6.80
1850: 1 Troy Ounce platina (ore, domestic )  = USD$ 6.10

The allusion to high Platinum prices suggests that the US price was trending higher, regardless of other markets and because of battery & telegraph industrial demand.

USA, 1850: Platinum Imports & Ore Price

In 1850, the total value of imported Platinum & platina was USD$ 207,400. A US Customs agent a New York certified that no platina ore was imported, though $12,183. of unmanufactured platina was recorded.

However, "Native" Platinum was sold from NY catalogues; it originated in Colombia, Russia or outside the USA. And the Malvern Works were refining & producing for dentists after 1842; it's most likely an undisclosed amount of platina was shipping to Philadelphia.

Wells' textbook mentions manufactured Platinum retailed at $18. - 20. in the mid 1850s; these imported goods had been tariffed accordingly.

In 1853, the State Geologist of California reported the "commercial value" of crude platina was "about one-half the price of Gold" (crude Gold, selling as low as $16./oz.)

Platinum imports may have increased in 1851 after the discovery of California Gold and the utility of processing Au in Platinum stills.

1850: 1 Troy Ounce Platinum (Semi-Mfg & ore, Import) = USD$ 6.10

1850: 1 Ozt. Platinum (Mfg. Retail) "absurdly high" ; ~ double UK price $9.82 ?
c. 1851: 1 Ozt. platina (Ore, Mkt.) = USD$ 5.
1851: 1 Ozt. Platinum (Mfg. Ret.) = USD$ 15.
c. 1852: 1 Ozt. platina (Ore, Ret.) ~ USD$ 8.
