"I think the friends of Practical Chemistry in Russia's empire might find useful this communication of a price list for Platinum apparatus which I have just received from Frankfurt am Main, especially since I have been frequently observing platinum crucibles from France as followed.

Previously known to be manufactured by Janety the Younger in Paris (Rue Colombier, 21 and Rue Neuve de l'Abbaye 14, Faubourg Saint-Germain) are Platinum crucibles, evaporating basins, spatulas, funnels and various chemical equipment : Fr. 24. per Once ; Platinum foil and wire: Fr. 20. per Once ; and Platinum scraps and platina: Fr. 15. per Once. Also assumed to be observed the same at the Pharmacist Guilbert in Paris (Rue Dauphiné, No. 38).

Here is the Price-List of Platinum-Apparatus just now sourced from Frankfurt a.M.  Mr. Albert has a great warehouse of sundry instruments, models, tools, and the like, shown in a complete list (of 96 pages in octavo) distributed.

Price-List of Platinum apparatus which Joh{ann} Val{entin} Albert has provisioned in Frankfurt; by request, any other arbitrary shapes are manufactured from platinum

Bekanntlich verfertigt bisher Jannnety d. jung.

Another letter from Abbe to Schott states:
“A platinum crucible of about 60 ccm volume, with lid and a thick platinum rod for stirring - the whole for about
100. - I do hope to receive in the next few days - possibly this crucible may provide you some help in your next melts ....” (14).

The expenses for platinum equipment for melting experiments carried out between the Spring of 1881 and the end of 1883 amounted to 4,000. (16).

Platinum Weights

Batteries:
For 10-Elements, the mid-size Copper-Zinc 6-Element should cost Thlr. 16.70 (Fl. 29.23) or Fl. 2.9225 (USD$ 1.22) per element.

For 10-Elements, the mid-size Platinum-Zinc 6-Element (24 Quadratzoll) should likewise cost Thlr. 65. (Fl. 113.75) or Fl. 11.375 (USD$ 4.74) per element, a Platinum sheet ~11 Sq. In. (7.25 in. x 1.50 in. = ~70.2 cm2) with 22 Sq. In. (~140.4 cm2) surface area.

A study by Prof. Carl Kuhn of München, where 1 Element (Grove's type Platinum-Zinc Battery) costing Fl. 12./Thlr 6.86 with a Platinum Foil of 12-Quadratzoll (71 cm² or 11.00 in2 and 22 in2 surface) ; Fl. 12 = USD$ 5.

Assuming 24 Quadratzoll (Bavaria) = 22 in2 double-sided surface area, equivalent batteries in different materials should reveal the cost per in2 of Platinum Foil.  (In Berlin, for the 10-Element as described, the Platinum would have a marginal cost of Fl. 85, rather than Fl. 95 as Kuhn states.)

A Platinum-Zinc battery of 10 combined elements costs, if the platinum plate has about 141.974 cm² surface, Fl. 120.; another such battery, wherein the surface of the platinum plate each element has approximately 94.65 - 106.5 cm² surface, is made at for of Fl. 80 (87) whereas a 10-element combined copper-zinc battery for my device hardly costs Fl. 25, in the same circumstances a carbon-zinc battery  costs more by about half, and the maintenance costs of a carbon-zinc battery, as well as a platinum zinc battery is higher than that of copper-zinc battery. For these and many other reasons, the copper-zinc battery should be seen for present purposes in practice as the most advantageous in the series.
