USA, 1868-75: Investogation of Chemical Markups

The retail charge to University of Michigan students was 40-60% over currency rates, but as high as 300% for some rarer chemicals & reagents.  It is entirely reasonable to assume that Platinum (among the rarest elements) was also subject to the high mark-ups.  


Clearly, the retail price charged was much, much higher than wholesale catalogue prices.
