1880: Unusual Platinum counterfeit Sovereign found in Sydney. A full-weight Sovereign weighted .2568 Ozt.

If the the counterfeit Alloy was the same as the Napoleon of 1874 (81.5% Pt, 18.5% Cu) and a full-weight "Doblon d'Isabel" weighed .2611/.2681 Ozt. Platinum Doblon counterfeits were known to weigh as much as .27 Ozt (8.4 g) and gilding to the UK Sovereign form should have increased mass to perhaps .268 Ozt (8. g) There was ~6.62 g. Platinum in the planchet.

At Stack's New York 2011 International Sale (1/10/2011) an example described as "Boldly lustrous, struck on 8.4 gram planchet (correct weight was 8.3371 grams)" sold for USD$546.25 (+15% = $628.20) With Spot Platinum $1,770, the retail premium for Platinum investment x, the numismatic premium is y. Where local coin shops quoted the 1/10th Ozt Platinum Eagle for $229., the approximate Retail Pt Coin Premium should have been 29.38%. The Platinum Counterfeit Doblon D'Isabel therefore had a retail numismatic premium of 2.27x over Pt Coin Spot. 

(The US Mint's Retail Pt Coin Premium for the 1 Ozt Coin was was 17.59% on 5/26/11.)
